Training Horses

We are not accepting any horses at this time, but we can refer you to someone who trains for us.

We believe it is best to train training horses to drive when they are 2 to 4 years old but we have found that most horses over 5 years old might not take to training as well.
Training  - $1200 per horse for the first 30 days of work. $800 for each additional month of training. Plus $10 a day board. This includes hay. Pen are cleaned daily and horses are fed twice a day. We have a few trainers in Iowa that we trust - this is where we take all our young stock for training. They charge much less than we do and have lots of work for horses to do. After training most horses are used to all types of farm machinery, street driving and they learn how to stand quiet.
Board
We charge $10 a day per horse while here for training. This fee includes hay but not any additional feed or supplements. We will discuss any feeding preferences you may have. We feed twice a day and clean pens daily.
Veterinary
We have an excellent large animal and equine veterinarian, Dr. Phil Murphy, right next door to our facilities. We only call for him if we think it is necessary. If it is not an emergency situation we will contact the horse's owner with our suggestions. Any veterinary fees will be at the expense of the owners.
We suggest you have all current vaccinations and worming for your horses. The state of Montana requires a negative coggins test with in a year and current health papers. The state also requires a brand slip or travel permit AND an importation number obtained by your veterinarian.
Harness and Equipment
We have a great supply of harness, collars and a variety of vehicles for training horse of many sizes from pony to draft. We recommend you bring your own harness so we may fit it to your horse and if the harness is appropriate we will use it for training. We do not recommend you use any old harness with your horses, ever, unless it is in exceptional condition. Old dried leather does not stand up to much stress and may cause some safety issues. We want you to be as safe as possible.
If you do not have harness, let us order what would work best for you, your horse and your application. We are distributors for several harness makers, suppliers and equipment manufactures. Our clients have found they save a lot of headaches in trying to figure out what they need by letting us choose what is right. We will discuss your individual needs.
Deposit
A deposit of $250 is required at the time you schedule training for your horse.
You will be expected to pay for all or at least 50% of the training plus a month board in advance.
If you have more questions, feel free to call us at 406-846-3686 or Email
